Job Summary
The Search and Rescue (SAR) Medic Instructor will establish, implement,
update, train and enforce SAR, Medical and Non-rated crew member (NRCM)
procedures.
Principal Accountabilities
•Assist the Rotary Wing Lead and Standardization Pilots on issues and
activities related to SAR and NRCM/SAR Medic
Standardization/Procedures/Training.
•Ensure that all ATMs, ATP, and FTGs are followed.
•Assist the SAR/MED supervisor in the development of local Standard
Operating Procedures (SOP) for SAR, security and medical procedures.
•Conduct medical and security training for contractor and host nation personnel as required.
•Responsible for protection of program resources, medical supplies, equipment and operational security (OPSEC).
•Monitor medical issues in Afghanistan to ensure contractor personnel
are apprised of current medical threats and aware of preventative
measures and risks.
•Monitor security requirements at the FOB/MOB to ensure they meet
changing threat levels and/or new/revised security requirements.
•Conduct facility inspections and threat analysis at FOB/MOB to evaluate
site security, operational security, communications and medical threats
associated with such things as drinking water, living conditions, food
handling/storage, animal/insect threats and sanitary conditions.
•Conduct threat analysis at hazardous locations where personnel are assigned to better protect resources and personnel.
•Inform Management of any country-required immunizations, health or security related issues.
•Perform duties as Flight Instructor for the SAR program.
•Ensure that the ATM is followed.
•Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Skills
•In-depth knowledge of ATM, ATP, FTG and Ops Directives.
•In-depth knowledge of Security and life-saving Medical procedures.
•Working knowledge of FOL sanitary requirements to maintain a healthy working environment.
•Knowledge of body recovery procedures.
•Knowledge of advanced cardiology, to include operation of defibulatory
equipment, accurate reading and diagnosis of cardiac strips, and ACLS
algorithms with appropriate drug treatment protocol.
•Knowledgeable of Advanced Trauma Care, to include immediate assessment
and treatment of ANY traumatic life threatening injury, advanced airway
management (Intubations, Surgical Cricothyrotomy), advanced invasive
procedures (Needle Decompression, Chest Tube Thoracotomy), advanced
Circulatory support (Venous access through cut down procedures, blood
typing, cross match, blood transfusion protocols).
•Knowledge of Advanced Diagnosis and Treatment of illnesses to include,
but not limited to, the following systems cardiac, pulmonary,
dermatology, musculoskeletal, neurological, endocrine, gastrointestinal,
and genitourinary.
•Knowledgeable of wound repair including anesthesia, nerve blocks, suturing with proper aseptic technique.
•General knowledge of radiological (basic) analysis.
•Instructor/trainer and Inventory management skills.
•Able to complete and pass a Class III Flying Duty Medical Examination.
•Light infantry patrolling and tactics skills are required.
•Possess a valid US Passport or have the ability to obtain one before assignment
•Possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of
Defense (DoD) Secret Security Clearance is a condition of employment; an
active DoD Secret Security Clearance is preferred.
Experience & Education
•Minimum of ten (10) years Special Operations experience while on military active Duty.
•Minimum of one (1) year experience as SAR flight medic.
•Weapons training combat conditions experience, intelligence or
counter-intelligence experience, previous exposure to theater of
operations and more specifically, in country experience is desired.
•Experience should emphasize on dealing with Security / Medical / SAR
issues, with protection of life and assets and life saving procedures.
•Have extensive experience in security and combat medicine.
•Extensive experience dealing with life saving procedures, conducting
routine and emergency life saving treatment in an austere environment
and providing unsupported lifesaving care to a patient for up to 48
hours.
•Experience in conducting base camp health/hygiene surveys and
conducting hospital medical surveys in developing countries/regions is
required.
•Extensive experience in assessing OCONUS regional/local medical
treatment capability and developing/implementing MEDEVAC plans and
procedures are required.
•Extensive experience as a trainer/instructor of medical-related topics is desired.
•Exposure to Search & Rescue operations in a high-threat environment is desired.
•Personnel should be eligible for award of the U.S. Army 18D MOS
qualified or and / or state or national EMT certification, Special
Operations Medical Sergeant or Foreign Service equivalent qualification.
•Graduate of a Military or DOS Flight Instructor course.
•High school diploma or equivalent is required.
•Associate’s degree majoring in security management, resource
protection, trauma management, first responder procedures, combat
medicine or other related area of study is preferred.
•Must attend and successfully complete weapons qualification, security
training, psychological profiling and High Threat - Survival Escape and
Evasion training prior to deployment.
•U.S. Army 18D MOS, Special Operations Medical Sergeant or Service equivalent qualification.
•EMTP (U.S.)
•FAA Class III Medical Certificate.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
•Must be able to walk or stand on level and/or inclined surfaces up to
eight (8) hours per day and sit for up to three (3) hours per day.
•Must be able to routinely climb / descend stairs.
•Employee must be able to lift and carry 12O pounds 100 meters.
•Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger
dexterity, bend elbows / knees, and reach above / below shoulders.
•Must be able to read and interpret newspaper and typewritten print.
•Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
•Must be able to distinguish color and judge three-dimensional depths.
•All employees must receive immunizations appropriate to the theater of operations prior to employment.
•Must attend and successfully complete weapons qualification, security
training, psychological profiling and High Threat - Survival Escape and
Evasion training prior to deployment.
•Employee will be required to work and live in a potentially hostile
environment, at remote locations, and under austere conditions.
•Employee may be required to respond to a wide variety of operational
circumstances, under extreme weather conditions, within a hostile
environment.
•The individual may be exposed to extreme noise from aircraft, hostile
fire, and other acts of aggression associated with this region.
•Individuals may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and work in
close proximity to moving mechanical parts, aircraft, and vehicles.
Travel
•Travel to and between CONUS and OCONUS locations is required.
Qualifications
SAR Medic: Provide search and rescue, medical and protective support for
personnel during flights in austere locations during the day and night,
and while wearing night vision goggles. Conducts training, local
medical threat and hazardous location evaluation as required. Clinic,
Records, and Supply Tech duties as required. Must be proficient in the
operation of aircraft armament systems (M-240 series, GAU-17) and
accompanying subsystems.
FI/SI: Train and evaluate medic technicians in the following tasks:
aircrew coordination, litter and ambulatory patient load/secure/unload
procedures, medical treatment for patients and operation of mission
medical equipment to ensure effective efficiencies in compliance with
medical protocols and legal requirements. Conducts academic and hands-on
performance training and administers evaluations to ensure crewmember
proficiency. Develops training and qualification FTGs
Experience: Seven (7) years in-depth knowledge of Security and
life-saving Medical procedures. Trainer - 1 year field experience.
Stamdards - 2 years field experience. Trainer / Standards positions
require OJT due to no military school equivalent exists. Weapons
training combat conditions experience, intelligence or
counter-intelligence experience.
EMT-P and/or CCEMTP preferred. Current FAA Class III Medical Certificate
U.S. Army 18D MOS, Special Operations Medical Sergeant, or Sister Service equivalent qualification.
