It provides for an interesting and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness, as well as more stamina and commitment than elsewhere to make life comfortable and affordable. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in relatively harsh and potentially hazardous conditions, involving physical hardship and little comfort, are essential. Erbil is an open duty station with conducive living conditions, UN staff live in their own rented apartments cleared by security. Accommodations are available to be rented as apartments or hotel rooms. Access to telecommunication, ATM, medical clinic, restaurant, recreation center, gym, and transportation is available. Prevailing security conditions at the duty station are better than some other parts and the staff goes around in the city for shopping, groceries, restaurants. Erbil has a hot desert climate with hot and dry summers and relatively mild winters.
