Summary:
Responsible for providing clinical care to United States Antarctic Program (USAP) participants in collaboration with the station physician and under approved field medical protocols. While primarily working in a remote field camp, manages the medical aspects of care in the observation, assessment, diagnosis, intervention, evaluation, rehabilitation, care and counsel, and health teachings of persons who are ill, injured, or infirm or experiencing changes in normal health processes. Promotes and supports the maintenance of health and prevention of illness in a remote clinical setting.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Obtains medical histories, organizes relevant data, performs physical examinations, and suggests pertinent laboratory, radiographic or other studies that are needed to establish or support a diagnosis.
Performs preliminary reviews of radiographs, laboratory data, ECGs (when such equipment is available) and other relevant clinical information; formulates and orders (within license) therapeutic regimens for treatment of pathologic states or disabling entities.
Documents histories, physical examinations, and relevant clinical information, ensuring adequate documentation of existing medical conditions; medically classifies patients according to physical, functional, and emotional capabilities.
Provides consultation services to all medical personnel/platforms within the USAP.
Monitors treatment progress and protocols of patients in remote clinical settings; counsels patients on preventative medicine regimens; reviews medical records or therapeutic regimens to insure proper content and appropriateness of medical regimen.
Provides patient counseling and health instruction about medical problems, nutrition, medication and principles of health promotion and maintenance.
Serves as representative and emissary of the physician in delegated matters of related duties as required. Interdisciplinary coordination and clinical care responsibilities.
Documents all health care encounters and relevant clinical information in the medical records and provides end of season inventory and reports.
Identifies appropriate internal controls for department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.
Acts as a first responder in a remote field camp with limited medical equipment.
Regularly performs community duties such as shoveling snow, cooking, cleaning, and handling/loading cargo as necessary.
Performs other duties as required.
ENVIRONMENT:
Remote field camp setting located in Antarctica with temperatures ranging from -50F to +20F.
Field camp population of 15-25 people, while also supporting rotating science groups and related staff.
Field clinic located in a Polar tent structure (heated).
Limited diagnostic equipment (no x-ray, or labs, etc.).
Provider will assist with other duties common in the field camp setting: shoveling snow, cargo handling, etc.
Communications likely limited to Iridium phone only.
REQUIREMENTS:
Current licensed Registered Nurse from an accredited professional nursing school with a minimum of five (5) years RN experience, including recent Emergency nursing experience.
Or
Graduation from an Accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner Program and current licensure to practice from any U.S. state with a minimum of two years’ experience in a primary care or emergency medicine practice.
Hold current BCLS, ATLS and ACLS certification(s).
Prehospital experience required: Emergency Medical Service, Flight RN, active search and rescue or equivalent.
Experience operating with minimal support and/or off-line medical control.
Knowledge of current trends and concepts in wilderness and remote medicine.
Must be able to physically qualify and deploy to remote field locations in Antarctica.
US citizenship or Permanent US Resident status is required.
