Job Summary
The Flight Surgeon will provide emergency medical care to pilots and their crew. Flight surgeons make sure soldiers are healthy before missions and promote healthy diets and lifestyles to prevent the spread of illnesses
Principal Accountabilities
(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract)
Conduct medical examinations and provide medical care for aircrews
Determine fitness for flying and special duties as well as evaluating living and working environments to detect and control health hazards
Provide medical support including duty in all aspects of special operations
Regularly participate in flying missions (of nearly all types of aircraft platforms) to observe and advise on aeromedical issues
Develop and manage preventive medicine programs, including the education of flight personnel in healthy lifestyles
Establish procedures for managing casualties in aviation accidents and other disasters
Provide advice on aeromedical evacuation and serve on aviation mishap investigation boards
Serve as the liaison between flying squadrons and medical services
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of preventive medicine, primary care, and contingency planning.
Knowledge of community health requirements.
Aeromedical disposition for operational duties.
Experience & Education
Flight surgeons must possess a doctor of medicine or a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree and complete a post-graduate surgical residency.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
Must be able to lift 50 lbs
