Nurses, Doctors & Paramedics Needed for International Expeditions

Recruiter:Raleigh International
Location: Global
Website: Raleigh International
Raleigh International is a sustainable development charity and we are currently recruiting Medics to volunteer on our 8 and 13 week expeditions this summer in Borneo, Costa Rica & Nicaragua and Tanzania. This is an exciting opportunity to use your specialist skills to drive and support young people on valuable sustainable international development projects.

This role requires you being both a Medic and a Project Manager. You will divide your time between delivering the aims of the project and facilitating the personal development of the volunteers in the group, whilst continuously delivering all medical advice and support.

You and at least one other project manager will be responsible for running the project in a remote area, managing around 12 international volunteers. You will also be on hand to look after the general health of the volunteers, giving them basic first aid whilst also reacting to and managing any emergencies that may occur. The rest of your time may be spent at Raleigh’s fieldbase, our in-country headquarters, supporting projects without a medic.

Requirements:
Essential Skills
  • Medically qualified (either Doctor, Registered General Nurse or Paramedic) with a minimum of two years’ experience post-qualification
  • Medical skills that are transferable to remote static environments as well as transient trekking sites.
  • Willingness to be flexible and put the needs of the expedition and the volunteers first
  • Ability to teach basic first aid and promote health and safety on expedition.
  • Ability to prioritise
  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to listen, empathise and work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds
  • Open-minded attitude to learning about and engaging with Raleigh’s personal development concepts
  • Ability to apply Raleigh’s development concepts to own personal development
  • Ability to manage a variety of demanding and sometimes conflicting responsibilities in a physical, remote and dynamic environment
  • Capacity to display effective personal leadership and develop leadership skills of others
  • Ability to plan logically and in detail, producing practical, effective solutions to manage resources, achieve goals or overcome real problems
Desirable Skills
  • A comprehensive understanding of wound care
  • Ability to cannulate
  • Accident and emergency experience
  • Knowledge of sports injuries, tropical diseases and mountaineering medicine (as applicable to the expedition country)
  • Previous experience of working with young people (17-24 years old)

All our volunteer managers are expected to fundraise for Raleigh International before the expedition. Fundraising targets vary between the different roles but once you are in country Raleigh will cover the cost of your food, accommodation, training and preparation, specialist equipment, and insurance (excluding personal belongings cover).  In addition to this target, you will need to fund your own flights to and from the expedition country, vaccinations, personal kit and a visa, if required.

We recognise as a medic you have specialised skills so are pleased to offer a further bursary for successful medic applicants.

How can I apply?
Our assessment weekends are the next step into securing a place on an expedition and are a great way to experience what expedition life may be like whilst meeting like-minded people. The next assessment weekend for Raleigh summer 2015 expeditions is: 28 – 29th March 2015
