UNAMA was established in 2002 as a Political/ Peacebuilding Mission, exceptionally) directed and supported by the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO).

Context
The  was established by the Security Council Resolution 1876 of 26 June 2002. The UN medical services provide timely and reliable, customer-oriented, cost-efficient, and prompt medical care to all UN staff members. The recent UNAMA strategic review indicates a continued commitment to a UN field presence, which is to be the cornerstone of engagement in supporting Afghans across the country. To fulfill this commitment, the UN requires the right resources and support mechanisms, which include medical emergency response. The Medical Section aims to protect and promote staff health, to sustain and improve their working capacity, contribute to a safe and healthy working environment, and promote the adaptation of work to the capabilities of staff, taking account of their health status. With this in mind and given the current heightened security situation in the mission environment as well as the current Covid-19 pandemic, we are seeking paramedics with a specialty in emergency medicine and or with skill sets acquired from qualification or extensive experience in the coordination of medical emergencies in the field. Under the direct supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, the emergency nurse / Paramedic will ensure the provision of efficient medical emergency care and nursing services to UN staff and their eligible dependents

Task description

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of MERT Doctor and Head Nurse or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Emergency Nurse will: The Emergency Nurse/Paramedic task is to do day to day clinic activities as directed by the MERT doctor and head nurse, receiving patients, take vital signs, assist in emergency management of patients, provide first aid, provide basic life support and CPR when required; taking ECG, establish IV lines; provide in training of the staff, In Sum: Recognize a medical emergency; assess the situation; manage emergency care and, if needed, extricate; coordinate efforts with those of other agencies that may be involved in the care and transportation of the patient; and establish rapport with the patient and significant others to decrease their state of anxiety. Give priorities to emergency treatment as per designated medical command authority and provide emergency treatment. Provide medical escort in aeromedical evacuations within Afghanistan. Record and communicate pertinent data to the designated medical command authority. Direct and coordinate the transport of the patient by selecting the best available method(s) in conjunction with medical command authority. Ensure the maintenance and preparation of emergency care equipment and supplies, if needed together with the pharmacist for requisitioning and replenishing expired items/ drugs. Assist the MERT Doctor, Head Nurse and other medical staff on patient care and other duties as deemed necessary. Be prepared to cover duties in UNOCA, Alpha and Icon Compounds while transiting in Kabul. Actively participate in the mass casualty incident management trainings, exercises, and activities. Prepare and update MCI boxes, IFAKs and arrange drugs and supplies in field locations stations whenever necessary. Age: 27 - 80

Nationality
Candidate must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment.

Requirements
Required experience

6 years of experience in A minimum of three years of progressively responsible clinical experience in emergencies. Experience in working in emergency department is an advantage

Required education level
Bachelor degree or equivalent in Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in Paramedics or Nursing diploma or equivalent deegree from recognized institution. Additional training in EMS, Advanced Trauma life Support (ATLS); Basic Cardiac Life support (BCLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS); and disaster management is an advantage.
