Emergency Nurse (Paramedic)

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task
Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of MERT Doctor and Head Nurse or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Emergency Nurse will:

The Emergency Nurse/Paramedic task is to do day to day clinic activities as directed by the MERT doctor and head nurse, receiving patients, take vital signs, assist in emergency management of patients, provide first aid, provide basic life support and CPR when required; taking ECG, establish IV lines; provide in training of the staff, In Sum:
Recognize a medical emergency; assess the situation; manage emergency care and, if needed, extricate; coordinate efforts with those of other agencies that may be involved in the care and transportation of the patient; and establish rapport with the patient and significant others to decrease their state of anxiety.
Give priorities to emergency treatment as per designated medical command authority and provide emergency treatment.
Provide medical escort in aeromedical evacuations within Afghanistan.
Record and communicate pertinent data to the designated medical command authority.
Direct and coordinate the transport of the patient by selecting the best available method(s) in conjunction with medical command authority.
Ensure the maintenance and preparation of emergency care equipment and supplies, if needed together with the pharmacist for requisitioning and replenishing expired items/ drugs.
Assist the MERT Doctor, Head Nurse and other medical staff on patient care and other duties as deemed necessary.
Be prepared to cover duties in UNOCA, Alpha and Icon Compounds while transiting in Kabul.
Actively participate in the mass casualty incident management trainings, exercises, and activities.
Prepare and update MCI boxes, IFAKs and arrange drugs and supplies in field locations stations whenever necessary.
Do other activities related to the above as assigned by the MERT Doctor, head nurse or chief of section.
When working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-)governmental counterparts, including Implementing Partners (IPs), the incumbent is strongly encouraged to set aside dedicated time for capacity development through coaching, mentoring and formal and on-the-job training.

Other Duties and Functions:
Provide UN Buddy First Aid Course to all staff members in the region.
Assists the head nurse in the preparation and arrangement of Q&A/Staff Coordination Meetings and MST Case Presentations.
Conduct periodic inventory of Expendable and Non-Expendable assets of UNAMA Medical Section.
Attends weekly DHMOSH Global Meetings on COVID-19 and other relevant topics.
Provides first-aid services during Welfare Section sponsored social and recreational activities in UNOCA compounds during weekends.
Participates actively in various UNV activities like Blood Donation Campaign.


Qualifications/Requirements
Required degree level
Bachelor degree or equivalent.

Educational additional comments
Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in Paramedics or Nursing or equivalent from a recognized University. Additional training in EMS, Advanced Trauma life Support (ATLS); Basic Cardiac Life support (BCLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS); and disaster management is an advantage.

Required experience
72 Months.

Experience remark
A minimum of three years of progressively responsible clinical experience in emergencies. Experience in working in emergency department is an advantage

Language skills
English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent.

Area of expertise
General human medicine (with clinical experience), Paramedical experience, Nursing and midwifery.

Critical Emergency Care and administration
Knowledge in the following continuous medical education and certification is highly desirable as this experience will ensure that training can be given to staff members as well as experience in stabilization and referral of medical and trauma emergencies.
Advanced Trauma life Support (ATLS).
Basic Cardiac Life support (BCLS).
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).
Knowledge in clinical and occupational, tropical/travel medicine and emergency responses.
Aeromedical evacuations.
Ability to provide first aid training to staff members.
