Context & Mission

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent humanitarian organization providing medical aid to victims of man-made or natural disasters, epidemics and endemic diseases. In the MSF Operational Centre Geneva (OCG), the steering and implementation of field programmes is under the responsibility of an Operations Department, which includes direct medical support to field implementation ensuring fundamental medical standards are reached in all projects. The development of technical and/or strategic solutions adapted to complex medical challenges faced in the field, or to fulfill chosen medical ambitions, is under the responsibility of the Medical Department. Collaborative work between these two departments is considered a cornerstone for the organisation to improve the general quality of its projects and the level of care for patients.

Responsibilities


Medical advisors will be working in the Medical Department. Specific tasks are :
Guidance and support on implementation of IPC activities and nursing care at Field level; identify challenges and recommend measures and steps forward to overcome way forward.
Work with Medical Department Referents and/or Other Department Referents in providing technical support related to transversal or common/transversal areas or topics
Transversal collaboration with other members of the Thematic Unit
Tasks will be identified according Thematic Unit priority
Serve as focal point in the Medical Department, towards other sections, and with external partners for IPC and nursing care related issues.
Act as core member of ATB resistance task force for MSF OCG, in close collaboration with ABR Focal point, Diagnosis Referent and Pharma section.
Technical focal point for the IPC flying person, including planning of their field visits with cells and field teams
Briefing and Debriefing: Medcos, PMR, nurses, midwives, OT nurses, sometimes logisticians (IPC)
Determine the training needs related to IPC in collaboration with the Medical Learning Referent, and following the needs identified by Operations and Medical Departments.

Others responsibilities
Support to Medical Operation Support Unit (MOSU) and Medical Responsible of the Program (RMP)
Respond to complex and technical issues requiring expertise or/and development
Strengthen the skills and competencies of MSF staff through capacity building in their domain
Develop the expertise related to their medical area and integrate external knowledge into MSF practices
Support the implementation of innovation and operational research projects.

Your Profile
Education

Diploma in Nursing Care, IPC diploma or a strong IPC experience.

Experience
Field experience in emergencies and epidemics is an asset
Experience with MSF or with other humanitarian organizations in developing countries
2 years’ work experience in developing countries.
Experience as Nurse Manager or as a senior nurse or Director of Nursing
Experience in risk management
Training skills and experience would be an asset
Knowledge of recent developments in the field of humanitarian relief, international public health, tropical medicine, planetary health and climate change
Relevant experience in infection control and sterilization is essential. (planning and implementation IPC programmes in hospital settings) in an IPC position.
Technical competencies
Availability to travel to the field regularly is required (around 20% of her/his time)
Ability to assess existing evidence to translate that into adapted guidance for field team
Understanding of medical humanitarian work with regards to the medical-technical and the political dimensions
Ability to analyze medical and structural issues.
Excellent writing skills
Good training skills.

Computer skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Languages
English and French with good working knowledge of both languages.

Terms of Employment
Open-ended contract, 100%
Based in Geneva, with field visits (20%)
Starting date: early January 2021
Gross annual salary: from CHF 98’016.- to CHF 111’732.- (salary commensurate with experience and according to internal salary grid)
