The Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) Mission is to provide Naval Warfare Centers, the Fleet, and other customers with accurate undersea, surface, and in-air three-dimensional tracking data and other unique Atlantic test facilities.  In support of Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E), and Fleet readiness assessment and training. AUTEC is a Major Range and Test Facility Base (MRTFB) and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport's largest single team project, providing both deep and shallow water test and training environments.


Responsibilities:

Responsible for the direction of all medical care at the AUTEC medical facility. In conjunction with other medical personnel provides 24-hour on-call duty on the AUTEC project.

Principal Responsibilities of the Classification:

Provide routine medical care and treatment of minor injuries/illnesses. Stabilize and prepare patients with serious medical illnesses/injuries for evacuation.
Supervise and interpret audiograms, electrocardiograms, laboratory tests, spirometry tests and Roentgenographic examinations.
Perform employment physicals for new hires and surveillance occupational health examinations.
Responsible for medical logistics related to medical evacuations, medical/surgical consultations and referrals with appropriate follow-up with the referral physicians and the provision of enroute medical attention when required.
Supervise and support nursing and administrative staff.
Proficiency in providing routine medical care, the treatment of minor injuries/illnesses, and the ability to stabilize and prepare for medical evacuation the seriously ill/injured.
Ability to supervise and provide support for the medical personnel associated with the AUTEC medical facility.
Primary diagnosis, initial treatment, or stabilization of: Myocardial infarction, cardiac dysrhythmia, fluid and electrolyte disorders (all age groups), heat related illnesses, burns, shock, fractures, penetrating wounds, depressed level of consciousness and coma, abdominal surgical emergencies (all age groups), appendicitis, gastrointestinal disorders, psychosis and potential suicide, poisoning, pyelonephritis, testicular torsion, hernia, urinary calculi, pulmonary insufficiency, decompression sickness, penetrating eye injuries, iritis, glaucoma, pregnancy, pelvic pain, pelvic inflammatory disease, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, threatened, incomplete, and completed abortion, well child care, pediatric preventive counseling, pediatrics (including otitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, gastroenteritis, and viral exanthems), drug overdose, ruptured tubal ectopic pregnancy.
Non-Medical Skills include computer literacy with the use of Word, Excel, Power Point as well as Electronic Medical Records.
Diagnostic or therapeutic procedures including, lumbar puncture, arterial gas sampling, initial interpretation of electrocardiogram before consultant confirmation, initial interpretation of chest, abdominal, skull, facial bone, spine, and extremity x-rays before consultant confirmation, incision and drainage of superficial abscesses and thrombosed external hemorrhoids, bladder catheterization, removal of corneal foreign body, use of Schiotz tonometer, interpretation of audiogram, performance of pelvic examination, splinting or stabilizing spine and extremity fractures, performance of fluorescein stain for conjunctival and corneal lesions, suture closure of 3 layer wound, eye irrigation, local infiltration anesthesia, intravenous infusion, needle aspiration of pneumothorax, tube thoracostomy, arthrocentesis, slit lamp use, endotracheal intubation, advanced airway management, transcutaneous cardiac pacing, use of portable ventilator
Comprehensive examination, diagnosis, and management of:  uncomplicated gynecologic problems, including vaginitis and sexually transmitted disease, contraception advice, prescription of oral contraceptives, and screening pelvic examinations; uncomplicated internal medicine problems, including cardiac disease, arthritis, gastrointestinal disease, hepatic disease, hypertension, anemia, pulmonary disease, renal disease, diabetes, neurologic disease, and thyroid disease; uncomplicated dermatologic problems not to include psoriasis or malignancy, but including acne, verruca, herpes simplex, seborrhea, dyshydrosis, scabies, pediculosis, cold injury, immersion dermatitis, planter warts, corns, and calluses;  uncomplicated orthopedic problems, including muscle strain, sprains, low back pain, bursitis, tendonitis, and minor musculoskeletal trauma;  uncomplicated otolaryngologic problems, including otitis media and externa, cerumen occlusion of canal, pharyngitis, laryngitis, removal of nasal or auditory canal foreign body, nosebleed, and rhinitis;  uncomplicated urologic problems, including cystitis, prostatitis, epididymitis, and sexually transmitted disease;  uncomplicated behavioral problems including crisis intervention, short term individual counseling for difficulty with interpersonal relationships or adapting to authority, and problems related to substance use and abuse;  uncomplicated environmental or occupationally-related problems, including asbestos, heat, and noise exposure screening and monitoring; ability to acquire proficiency in Occupational Medical Surveillance examinations and monitoring procedures,  uncomplicated ophthalmologic problems, including conjunctivitis, visual acuity testing, corneal abrasion, and conjunctival or corneal foreign body;  Emergency care as related to pregnancy up to 28 weeks gestation.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Doctorate of Medicine (MD) or Doctorate of Osteopathy (DO)
Board certification or Board Eligibility in Emergency Medicine, or Board Certification in General Practice, Family Practice, Surgery or Internal Medicine and 3 years of experience in Emergency Medicine. 
Valid Driver’s License and passport will be required.
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Must be able to reside in remote location with limited medical facilities.
This position requires the individual to be eligible to obtain a US Government security clearance;   US Citizenship is required.
