Position Summary:
Performs specialized duty work functions preparing for and responding to fire/medical emergency calls and providing general support within the Fire Department. Maintains readiness for emergency call response; responds to fire, medical, and related emergency calls when dispatched and takes proper action; educates staff and public on fire safety/prevention; and performs Fire Department activities. Responds to emergency calls, assesses the situation, obtains a basic medical history and physical examination of the patient, and provides emergency care at the scene and during transit to the hospital. Uses necessary medical equipment to assess the patient and ascertains the extent of their injuries or illness. Communicates with the paramedic and the Medical Officer about the patient's
condition, status, and arrival time. Is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within EMS operations. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks.
Major Activities:

1. Maintains vehicles, equipment, tools, and protective clothing in a serviceable ready-response
condition.
2. Responds to emergencies as required, suppress fire, and takes precautions to prevent re-kindling.
3. Administers medical services for patient care within scope of their training.
4. At the site of a fire, protect and preserves evidence indicating the cause of the fire.
5. Conducts recurrent proficiency training and OJT.
6. Instructs base populous in regards to medical classes.
7. Performs other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief.
Material & Equipment Directly Used
Operates all specialized equipment, as required in the position of NREMT-B
Working Environment :
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, tools and equipment which includes a motor vehicle, computer, stretchers, litters, medical equipment, etc. Must be physically able to carry objects, patients or materials. Must be able to exert in excess of one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of fifty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for very heavy work. Candidate will work on shifts consisting of 6 days at 8 hours per day totaling 48 hours per week. This consists of days, swings and midnight-shifts.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
Position will require lifting, pulling and dragging. Candidate must be able to lift at minimum 100lbs.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Must provide a copy of the diploma. Nationally Registered as an EMT-Basic (EMT-B), and hold CPR Certification.
Experience:The EMT-B must have a minimum of two years of experience working on an emergency response ambulance.
Skills:Need average communicative skills, both written & oral, computer skills, copier/scanning experience and the ability to learn newly admitted equipment into the EMS inventory. Preferred, seasoned instructor in the EMS career field.
Supervisory / Budget Responsibilities:
This position is not a supervisory position. The EMT-B reports upwardly to the Paramedic
Clearance Level required at Start Date: No Clearance Required
