Offshore Medic (Occupational Health Nurse) , Canada

Location:  Transocean Barents or Transocean Henry Goodrich, NL Canada

Status: Temporary full-time (until October 2019 with a possibility of extension)
Schedule: Offshore Site, Fly In/Fly Out-shift work-21 days on/21 days off

The Offshore Medic completes comprehensive nursing care including health promotion, illness prevention, supportive, curative, and rehabilitative care to individuals aboard the offshore rig as a member of an interdisciplinary/interpectoral team. The incumbent of this position will be working in collaboration with health care provider, educator, researcher and leader/advocate for both the patients in their care and professional issues affecting health care in general.

Roles and Responsibilities:
Teaches patients on wellness and health promotion
Assesses, diagnoses, plans, implements and evaluates plan of care for all occupational and non- occupational health concerns
Provides assessment, treatment and follow-up for client populations on board the offshore rig
Conducts diagnostic testing (including electrocardiography, and pulmonary function)
Checks and maintains all safety, clinic-based and emergency medical equipment including medications
Performs drug and alcohol testing as necessary
Contributes to Respiratory Protection program (Conduct medical evaluations, Mask Fit Testing,
Worksite Evaluations)
Consults with collaborating physician when required
Consults and updates the Medical Director, as required
Consults/collaborates with other health care providers to provide comprehensive patient care
Liaison with public health officials in relation to any public health issues or concerns.
Conducts periodic tours to maintain familiarity with work environment



Administrative/Support Activities (Duties will depend on the specific rig)
Provides variance reports
Attends and takes minutes for various meetings
Obtains PPE for new crew
Provides training of stretcher crew/and ECC for medical emergencies
Participates in the inspections, Sanitation, Hygiene and process
Maintains and enforces Pathogens containment and response protocols.
Completes water testing as necessary
Involved in Manual Handling Operations
Roles and Responsibilities are per the Code of Practice for Fatigue Management (11.5 of the
Code or Practice – Fatigue Management)
Roles and Responsibilities to ensure SDS are maintained and up to date
HSE Orientation
Heli admin (chopper and vessel transfers, “ after hours” as well)
Orientation for all new staff (including safety, inside and outside tours, take part in “ Welcome Aboard”
Updating all heli admin forms/welcome aboard presentations


Qualifications and Skills:
Successful completion and graduation from a Bachelor of Nursing program or equivalent
Current registration (or eligibility to register) with the Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (ARNNL)
Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, including at least 2 years acute care, critical care, or emergency nursing.
Minimum of 1 year in a supervisory experience
Minimum of 1 year of experience in the field of administration of industrial construction site medical services
Experience in EKG Interpretation, Venipuncture, Pulmonary Function and Audiometric testing and Interpretation
Current CPR, ACLS, ITLS
Medication administration including strong knowledge of advanced and critical care medications
Advanced physical assessment and critical thinking skills, and synthesizes findings to identify an appropriate diagnoses and develop a plan of care for each patient presentation
Evidence of active participation in professional growth and development activities
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Evidence of strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently


Must have or must be willing to obtain after hiring:
Husky Online Courses (within first week of hire) – including Environmental Awareness, Fatigue
Management, Safety Plan Awareness, Atlantic Environmental Awareness, Atlantic Regulatory Awareness, and others as added/required
Audiology course, or willing to obtain in first year of hire
Pulmonary function course, or willing to obtain in first year of hire
Non-Dot urine drug screening or willing to obtain in first year of hire
Non-Dot Breath Alcohol screening or willing to obtain in first year of hire


Preferred:

• BST, Confined Space, H2S Alive, Manual Handling, Survitec Flight Suite Measurement
• Fit Testing experience, instructor certification
• Occupational Health Nurse Certificate
• WHMIS training
• Teaching experience
