Organizational Setting
The FAO Health Services provides preventive medical, counselling, and occupational health services to FAO employees and their dependents, and advice on health related matters to the Organization. The Nursing Team is composed by a senior nurse and two part-time nurses. The Team offers a range of occupational health nursing services mainly divided into clinical services (emergency and patients’ care, health promotion, travel clinic) and medical administrative services.

Reporting Lines
The Nurse reports to the Medical Officer of the FAO Health Services. Work is performed autonomously, showing a high degree of initiative, judgment, and responsibility. Supervision is focused on facilitating service delivery and on meeting client requirements. The incumbent coordinates with other nurses and doctors in the team, and with the Receptionist.

Technical Focus

Providing nursing services for staff and dependents.

Tasks and responsibilities

Provide the appropriate nursing interventions in the Health Services for staff members/visitors in the event of medical emergencies during office hours;
Perform every day nursing clinical duties for employees, as authorized by the Medical officers, and administer routine medication, immunization and first aid treatment;
Provide the appropriate on-going nursing interventions in the Health Services for staff members with service-incurred injuries;
Under the guidance of the medical officer, arrange referrals to outside specialists and hospitals;
Within the private travel clinic, and under the guidance of the medical officer, administer vaccines and advise employees and their dependents on travel locations;
Under the guidance of the Medical Officer, perform health examinations and testing, e.g. electrocardiograms and vision screening;
Give intramuscular or subcutaneous injections to staff, as prescribed by own physicians and approved by the Medical Officer
Promote and provide preventative medical services to staff members (PAP tests, mammograms, HIV testing and confidential counseling, etc.)
Participate in developing and implementing training for medical emergencies (Basic Life Support-BLS, Pre-Hospital Trauma, Pediatrics) for employees of the UN Rome-based organizations (FAO, IFAD, WFP, ICCROM and others) and UN Field Security Officers and Advisers;
Under the guidance of the Head nurse, assist in maintaining the medical equipment in proper working order;
Assist in arranging for health promotion activities (i.e. first aid training, breast cancer/skin cancer/vision screenings), events and presentations for FAO employees at headquarters and in decentralized offices.
Assist with nursing coverage as needed
Assist the senior nurse with office support and administrative duties as required.



CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING



Minimum Requirements
University degree (B.S. or equivalent), in nursing with national nursing registration and licensing in country of origin
Recognized Certification in Basic Life Support
Five years of relevant experience in practical nursing care of which part, but not all, should be in an out-patient setting
Working knowledge of English (C level)

Technical/Functional Skills
Certification / Diploma / Degree in public health, occupational health, travel medicine or a related area desirable
Experience working in a multinational/multicultural environment highly desirable
Certification in PHTLS (pre-hospital trauma life support) or ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) desirable
Working knowledge of Italian and of Spanish or French are considered an strong asset
