ROLE SUMMARY
British Canoeing are seeking a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide the highest quality of medical leadership and strategic guidance to its Canoe Sprint, Paracanoe and Canoe Slalom World Class Performance programmes.

The CMO and the Performance Medicine team will work as part of a wider multi-disciplinary team to provide holistic daily performance support. Additionally, the prospective CMO will be required to develop and operationalise key strategies aimed at mitigating performance threat (risks) at individual and group level both home and abroad. The CMO will ensure British Canoeing medical provision is world leading and compliant with current best practice.

MAIN TASKS AND ACTIVITIES
Co-ordinate and manage medical services and facilities that are appropriate to the sport and the training objectives of elite athletes and coaches
Delivery of world leading clinical expertise to British Canoeing programme athletes in physical and mental health.
Supported by physiotherapy lead the development of an overall strategy for performance medicine which encompasses best practice in all aspects of governance, athlete physical and mental preparation and athlete management for British Canoeing
To work collaboratively with other medical personnel, sports science and selected support staff on individual and group based support/interventions e.g. athlete screening/injury prevention/return to water and anti-doping.
Implement and oversee appropriate quality assurance standards for personnel, service delivery and equipment
Ensure appropriate policy and procedures are in place and operational to prevent injury and illness for athletes and team both home and abroad.
Attend and lead medical case conferences and meetings to ensure optimal patient care and the development of the medical services.
Ensure the highest standard of care during athlete's injury or illness continuum including optimum rehabilitation and management of return to water process where required.
At all times to work within the General Medical Council (GMC) guidelines on patient confidentiality and data management.
Maintain up to date medical records and compliance as per regulations.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure that the role is visible and approachable to provide an additional avenue for staff and athletes to raise wellbeing concerns in a protective framework.
To assist in the development of guidelines, policies and related educational content for all aspects of performance medicine across the programme. This to include specific strategies to optimise staff athlete mental and physical heath and specific strategies to optimise female athlete health and welfare.
Support athlete induction processes (into the sport) and ensure appropriate screenings are conducted (e.g. mental health assessment, cardiac screening). To provide a responsive, accessible medical support service to the performance team where required including remote care/support sometimes out of hours.
To ensure a high standard of health promotion & preventative care strategy in liaison with the performance medicine team, including advice on the prevention of injury or illness, hygiene, vaccinations and environmental conditions.
Working closely with the internal British Canoeing anti-doping lead to promote drug-free sport through education of athletes & support staff and by using medication & supplement checks prior to competition.
To act as an independent arbitrator in disputes over selection with regard to fitness, illness and injury where required.
Contribute to working and steering groups which underpin key strategic aims.
Assist with recruitment, development and retention of key sports science and medicine staff when required.
Working closely with programme lead physiotherapists to ensure appropriate implementation of athlete centred performance medicine that is supported by a strong governance framework of policies and procedures.
Participate in ad hoc projects and/or applied research across the team as required.
Contribute to the delivery and periodic reporting of athlete illness and injury data as well as working within professional guidelines to ensure effective communication on athlete illness and injury to those that need to know.

Communication will be a stand out strength in all forms, allowing you to get your message across clearly. You will be proactive in seeking opinion/support/information from coaches and performance support teams that you operate within, possess a can do attitude and understand the rigours and demands of elite level sport. You will possess the experience and intellectual agility to gain a deep understanding of the sport and its future needs.
