Requirements
Degree in Nursing; 3 years’ continuous experience in Medical and/or Paediatric wards.
This role requires experience in basic nursing, the ability to care for acutely ill patients – including children – and good coordination skills.
BACKGROUND AND ORGANISATION OF WORK
The conflicts taking place in the region have led to a serious humanitarian crisis which has affected many people including Syrian refugees and the internally displaced.
The international Nurse will work with the international Doctor to manage the clinic offering primary health care and the other health and social care activities in aid of the population of the camps. In addition to the nursing and organisational duties, the international Nurse will work alongside, supervise and oversee the professional training of the national colleagues. The international Nurse is responsible to the Medical Coordinator, who is in charge of the management and organisation of the project.
The main areas of work are:
WAITING ROOM AND TRIAGE AREA: nursing triage in accordance with the protocols in use on the project;
OUTPATIENTS DEPARTMENT: 2-3 examination rooms for follow-up;
OBSERVATION WARD: 4 beds for the stabilisation of patients (only in Arbat Camp).
DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES
All EMERGENCY international personnel are expected to know and follow the hospital admissions criteria, guidelines, protocols, and the diagnosis and treatment standards in use in the centre, and to ensure the correct compilation of clinical records and statistics in both computer and paper formats.
The main duties and responsibilities of the International Nurse are:
management of nursing triage, in collaboration with the doctors and national colleagues;
care of patients in the observation bay and management of emergencies;
correct compilation and maintenance of nursing notes, clinical files and patient records;
correct application and supervision of the nursing protocols, including those regarding hygiene;
supervision of management of the pharmacy and orders of consumables;
assisting in clinical research and record keeping as required by the scientific programmes of the specialist sector of the Medical Division of EMERGENCY.
MANAGEMENT AND TRAINING OF LOCAL PERSONNEL
Clinical activities and patient care are always carried out alongside and in collaboration with local personnel, who thus benefit from training in the field.
CASELOAD AND EQUIPMENT
The technological level of the equipment present in the Centres is suited to the clinical and managerial protocols in use, and the level of professional autonomy of the national staff, with the aim of achieving – and sustaining – high standards of care.
Basic laboratory tests are available.
IRAQ PROGRAMME: Health Centres for Refugees and Internally Displaced
Since 2014, EMERGENCY has operated two Health Centres to provide free primary healthcare in the Iraqi IDP and Syrian refugee camps in Arbat. Faced by growing needs and the opening of new camps, in 2015 and 2016 EMERGENCY decided to expand its operations in Iraq. Four new Health Centres were established: two in the Qoratu and Tazade IDP camps in the Kalar area, the other two in the Ashti IDP camp in the Arbat area, a camp that hosts over 14,000 people.
The main medical conditions identified in these camps in 2016 were respiratory tract diseases (32%), gastrointestinal tract diseases (7%), skin infections (7%) and urinary tract infections (4%).
The Health Centres also became a focal point for patients affected by chronic conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension. In 2016, the Health Centres carried out almost 17,000 examinations, accounting for 11% of the total consultations.
GUIDELINES, PROTOCOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Further information on the guidelines, protocols and clinical services relevant to the post along with details of the instruments and equipment available will be provided at interview and during the period of preparation for the mission.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Nursing Degree (or equivalent Diploma) and current registration on the professional nursing register of your Country of residence;
at least three years’ continuous professional experience, preferably in medical and/or paediatric wards;
good working knowledge of the English language (B1/B2, Europass).
REQUIRED AVAILABILITY
6 months overseas stay including a period of leave to be taken at the end of the mission in agreement with the coordinator.
