Volunteer Emergency Nurse , Sierra Leone

The King’s Sierra Leone Partnership (KSLP) is a long-term capacity building partnership between King’s Health Partners in London and key partner institutions in Sierra Leone. KSLP aims to help strengthen Sierra Leone’s health system by improving training, clinical services, policy and research. Key partners include Connaught Hospital, the College of Medicine & Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), Connaught Government Hospital and the Ministry of Health & Sanitation (MOHS).

KSLP is looking to recruit an Emergency Nurse for its in-country team from March 2016. This person will be based in Freetown and will have an essential role in developing the connection between the broader strategic, management, training and policy work of KSLP and the realities of daily clinical nursing at Connaught Hospital.

Specifically, the role will include the following areas of work:
Strengthen nursing capacity through supporting nursing responsibilities e.g. vital sign measurement,
Develop an Emergency nursing teaching programme
Provide supervision and reinforcement of triage
Develop hospital systems e.g. use of an Early Warning Score, drug charts and medical records
Be involved in evaluating and improving services through audit and research
Support policy change eg free health care initiatives
Build relationships and influence behavior change amongst the nursing team

The Emergency Nurse would be expected to undertake some clinical activity, normally 1-2 days per week as an extra-numerary staff member mainly in the A&E department or on the general medical wards.

It is essential that candidates have the following:
Qualifications: A nursing degree; Professional registration in home country
Experience: At least 3 years of post-qualification experience; At least 2 years working in an A&E; Previous travel experience in Africa; Competent in mentoring and teaching
Personal Characteristics: Excellent interpersonal and intercultural skills, as well as confidence working with senior colleagues; Skilled at multitasking and prioritising, working independently with minimal supervision, leading and designing projects autonomously; An ability to be flexible and adaptable; An understanding of how to influence behaviour change; A willingness to teach and mentor

The Emergency Nurse is a 1 year voluntary position and will be provided with the following support:
Three return flights from London to Freetown
Multi-entry visa, residency permit & professional registration
Vaccinations & antimalarials
Accommodation in a shared KSLP house
Insurance
Stipend for living expenses (£500 per month paid in local currency)
