Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in Bangui, in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Central African Republic (MINUSCA). The Medical Assistant reports to the Medical Officer or the Chief Medical Officer.Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Head Nurse or Medical Officer, the incumbent will carry out the following duties;

• Responds to emergency calls and assists Medical Officers in providing adequate care.
• Works in the walk-in clinic & the nursing facility.
• Briefs incoming medical staff.
• Performs ECG, and other medical examinations such as blood tests, glucose,troponin, and urine tests as required.
• Prepares patients for different interventions and escorts patient to other medical facilities as required.
• Is on call as required.
• Performs nursing covering all activities related to her/his professional capacity.
• Assists with providing health education and addressing work environment and occupational health issues.
• Designs and implements outreach programs for mission Personnel.
• Ensures effective liaison between patient and private doctor, family members, and colleagues as appropriate; documents case findings.
• Provides a full range of medical services including laboratory examination services, diagnostic and screening tests and clinical assessment of patients.
• Provides care/advice or facilitates referral to the UN Medical Officer or to an outside physician, as required.
• Administers appropriate vaccines.
• Assists in providing health education and health promotion programs; participates in work environment assessments, e.g. office ergonomics, and addresses other occupational health issues.
• Facilitates an unimpeded supply of drugs, medical supplies, medical consumables, vaccines, condoms (male and female) and availability blood in the mission.
• Organizes patient appointments.
• Manages stocks and supplies.
• Actively contributes to the in-service education for nurses.
• Works in the pharmacy supporting the Pharmacist with maintaining the pharmacy database to ensure its integrity and advises the Pharmacist/Medical Officer on stock status.
• Ensures that regional clinics have up-dated medical supplies.
• Receives pharmaceutical items from the medical supply store and keeps records.
• Keeps clinic and pharmacy statistics.
• Updates the medical monthly report. Deputizes for the Head Nurse in h/her absence.
Performs other duties, as assigned.Competencies

Professionalism: 
Knowledge of clinical, occupational and travel nursing. Formal training in CPR and, preferably, in BCLS and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care. Knowledge of major medical office equipment and ability to use them in emergency situations. Knowledge of basic diagnostic equipment and ability to use them. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Education

High school diploma or equivalent technical or vocational certificate. Technical school, university and other courses and training programmes relating to the work. A Nursing Diploma is required. University degree and certifications in the relevant medical area is highly desirable. Training in Basic and advanced life support, knowledge of handling electronic medical records. The ability to operate medical equipment’s such as ECG Machine, Semi-automatic Defibrillator, Glucometer, Multi-parameter patient monitor as well as the ability to carry out basic rapid laboratory tests.

Work Experience

At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in Nursing, medical/technical assistance or related area. Experience in a UN Peacekeeping or other international organization is highly desirable.

Languages

Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English (both oral and written) is required; Working knowledge of French language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
