Extension of the appointment is subject to the extension of the mandate and/or the availability of funds. As the international tribunals are not integrated in the Secretariat, UN Staff Members serve on assignment or secondment from their parent department/office if selected. Appointments of staff members in the United Nations are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General. Staff Members are expected to move periodically to new functions in accordance with established rules and procedures, and may in this context be reassigned by the Secretary-General throughout the Organization based on the changing needs and mandates.

This position is located in the Medical Services Unit (MSU) of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), Arusha Branch. Under the supervision of the Medical Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for supporting the work of the MICT and United Nations Detention Facility (UNDF) clinics.Responsibilities

The Nurse will perform the following duties:

•Responds to emergency calls and assists Medical Officers in providing adequate care to staff, detainees; ensures effective liaison between patient and private doctor, paramedics, family members, and colleagues as appropriate; documents case findings.
•Performs diagnostic and screening tests such as: ECG, x-rays, laboratory (blood and urine), and other tests as required.
•Performs clinical assessment of patients visiting the walk-in clinic; provides care/advice accordingly or facilitates referral to the UN Medical Officer or to an outside physician, as indicated.
•Prepares vaccination schedules for detainees, staff and their dependents; ensures preparedness of staff travelling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccine, instructions on malaria prophylaxis and other travel-related ailments; instructs on the content and potential uses of the travel kit.
•Assists in providing health education and health promotion programs; participates in work environment assessment, e.g. office ergonomics, and addresses other occupational health issues.
•Prepares and supervises the daily work schedules, rotations, and duty rosters;
•With consultation of the Medical Officer, prepares a list of medications and vaccines according to the needs of the HSU;
•Supervises the proper storage of medications and vaccines;
•Participates in emergency coverage during non-working hours and holidays;
•Coordinates and supervises the proper filing of medical records of patients;
•Assists the Medical Officer in maintaining records of medical supplies and equipment of the MICT and UNDF clinics;
•Assists the Medical Officer in preparing quarterly statistical reports;
•Disposes of drugs according to the orders of the Medical Officer and other consultants;
•Performs other medical and administrative duties considered necessary by the Medical Officer.Competencies

•Professionalism – Knowledge of clinical, occupational and travel nursing. Formal training in CPR and, preferably, in BCLS and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care. Knowledge of major medical office equipment and ability to use them in emergency situations. Knowledge of basic diagnostic equipment and ability to use them. Knowledge of modern medical information technology and solid computer skill. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.

Post-Secondary education and completion of 2-3 year Nursing course resulting in certification as a Registered Nurse. A minimum of one year postgraduate course in Nursing or related medical course may be an advantage. Formal training in CPR is required. Formal training in BCLS and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care may be an advantage.Work Experience

Minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible nursing experience in a hospital or large clinic. Experience working within the United Nations common system or International Organization is highly desirable. Experience in an international medical body may be an advantage. Knowledge of major medical office equipment and ability to use them in emergency situations. Knowledge of basic diagnostic equipment and ability to use them.Languages

English and French are the working languages of the MICT. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French and/or Kinyarwanda is desirable. Knowledge of Kiswahili is an asset.Assessment Method
