Role Synopsis
The Occupational Health Advisor will provide technical Occupational Health expertise to the entity and community stakeholders to meet Operating Management System and regulatory obligations. He/she will act as single point of contact for contract health service providers to verify BP objectives and requirements are
met. He/she will support the Health Lead in the delivery of the entity’s occupational health programmes. He/she will be knowledgeable of, and advise the business of BP’s requirements, processes and priorities relating to medical case management in the work context as well as applicable health and welfare regulations; employment and civil law. He/she will provide information on travel related health risks and the prevention of travel related illness and ultimately uphold the ethical framework governing health/nursing practice.
Key accountabilities
• Advise the Upstream on continuously improving HSE-related performance
• Collate and disseminate management information on the health status of the workforce and utilization of services.
• Under the direction of the eHealth Director, support the business in the management of fitness for work/task through health assessments , and health risk management programs (including health surveillance, drugs and alcohol, ergonomics and fatigue management, travel health, infection control and disease prevention, emergency medical response, etc.).
• Support the business in the management of ill health through disability and case management programs and advise personnel, HR and line managers on aspects of sickness absence, rehabilitation and return to work.
• Provide consultancy for potential occupational illnesses and injuries, including appropriate monitoring and reporting.
• Support business objectives and cost management strategies for efficient use of health resources and services.
• Support other medical / OH personnel (e.g. site medics) in their roles as required
• Provide health expertise to functional groups (HR, Legal, Procurement), HSSE, Emergency Response and Leadership as required.
• Provides advice to line managers and HR, and attend meetings on the expected length of absence of an employee, the outcome of interventions, their capability to return to work and reasonable adjustments in compliance with current legislation/regulation.
• Promote workplace health and well-being and provide strategic input to the Wellness program where applicable.
Conducting HSE-related self-verification and supporting self-verification plans
• Conduct site OH visits and reviews
• Conducts verification activity as to whether medical confidentiality and management of medical records is conducted in line with regulatory, BP, and professional compliance.
• Provide/coordinate, monitor and evaluate risk-based occupational health programs and services to meet entity, segment, OMS and regulatory health requirements.
• Establish, manage, monitor and evaluate occupational health service contracts as per company procurement standards.
• Verify the Workers Compensation representative has been notified in compliance with state specific worker’s compensation requirements.
• Initiate and medically review federally mandated Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) process, within 5 business days. Notify the employee and HR when the Family Medical Leave is medically approved or denied.
Issuing and maintaining HSE-related procedures and guidance
• Develop DOT and OH procedures, policies and training for, or requested by the business and interface with the Occupational Physician where appropriate.
Conducting HSE-related activities in support of OMS conformance and HSE regulatory compliance
• Assist with recruitment, induction, training and development of health personnel.
• Compile correspondence and reports to managers, external agencies and/or external health programs as required. Provide reporting of statistical data and health metrics as required OA - Reporting
• Enable line capability in the identification of health risks (HealthMap and BP RAT) and the development and delivery of health facilities, competent staff, health programmes and systems to minimize the impact of risk. Facilitate project health risk assessment, as required.
Essential Education Registered Nurse with licensure in country of practice
Essential experience and job requirements • Experience in workers’ compensation case management and certification as a case manager such as CCM, CRRN or CDMS or OHN qualification.
• Experience undertaking case management in relation to absence issues, able to show knowledge of evidence based practice.
• Working in the oil/gas industry with OSHA Occupational Health and DOT
Substance abuse programs.
• Awareness of diverse cultures and employee population groups (e.g.
Represented workforce) and the needs of each business population.
