Expedition Doctor needed for charity Mount Kilimanjaro Trek
Dates: departs 20 September, returns 29 September
Location: Kilimanjaro Trek – Rongai route, 6 days
Description: A 6 day charity trek for Marie Curie Cancer Care to summit Mt Kilimanjaro (5895m), Tanzania. Supported by very experienced Tour Operator, UK expedition leader on trek and local guides. Approx 30 pax. Camping on trek, hotels beginning and end of trek.
Is this a paid position: Yes, and all travel/flights, accommodation, food, tour included. We will pay expenses of up to £400 to cover visas, insurance, travel to/from airport etc. Ultimate Challenges provide a well-equipped medical kit (plus oxygen and a hyperbaric chamber on the mountain).
Outline duties/responsibilities: You will be trekking with the group (back support) and will have your own porter to carry the medical kit. You will be expected to provide medical advice, dispense medication and services as appropriate and within your capability to the trek participants and other expedition staff. This may involve triage, stabilization, initial treatment and transfer of anyone suffering a serious illness or injury. You would be expected to have very good communication skills and work at all times with the GMC guidelines of Good Medical Practice and the Duties of a Doctor. The majority of our work on treks is general practice, and we pride ourselves on offering the same standards of care overseas as is offered to patients in the UK. Consequently we normally only employ doctors who have completed their GP training or have considerable A&E experience.
