Medical Coordinator, Iraq

DanChurchAid (DCA) invites applications for an experienced Medical Coordinator (MedCo) for its Iraqprogramme. This is a non-family position, based initially in Erbil, with frequent travel for prolonged periods of time to project locations in Iraq.

The main responsibilities of the MedCo are to provide medical assistance to all DCA and local partner survey, search and clearance activities in Iraq and to also train, mentor and capacity build National Medics. The MedCo reports directly to the Operations Manager.

The MedCo will have the following responsibilities:

Related to DCA staff and premises:

Provide technical input to the OM to prepare/update country specific medical SOPs;
Comply fully with DCA Medical and First Aid SOPs;
Provide technical medical oversight of relevant field operations over the components for which you are responsible, including training, daily operational planning and implementation, and the direction and discipline of locally employed medical staff;
Source, order and maintain all medical equipment and supplies in order to support DCA offices, teams and operations. Responsible for proper use and maintenance of all medical related equipment, such as vehicles, radios, medical equipment, etc.;
Implement a training management plan that serves all DCA staff in line with DCA Medical and First Aid SOPs. Provide theoretical and practical training on a regular basis;
Keep updated on all current methodologies and approaches relevant to humanitarian mine action;
Prepare all relevant reports and documentation in line with DCA Medical and First Aid SOPs
Establish and maintain positive working relationships, on a technical level, with other mine action operators in Iraq;
If appointed by the OM, take part in an accident/incident board of inquiry.


Related to local partner training and capacity building:
Work in coordination with local partner organization to assist them prepare and submit country specific medical SOPs;
Assist local partner to recruit national medics and subsequently train and capacity build national medics. Prepare and follow a tailored and structured training plan, and conduct regular training, both theoretical and practical, with all supporting documentation;
Assist local partners to source, order and maintain all medical equipment and supplies in order to support training school, teams and operations;
Train local partner medics to ensure proper use and maintenance of all medical related equipment, such as vehicles, radios, medical equipment, etc.;
Oversee management of national medics and conduct regular QA visits to project locations, providing constructive feedback for learning and improvement.



Additional responsibilities include:
Develop and maintain effective working relationship with other members of the programme to ensure maximum impact for beneficiary communities;
Represent DCA in relevant coordination bodies in Iraq;
Contribute to a culture of excellence, continuous improvement and performance optimization across all projects;
Be a role model for diversity and inclusion, as well as a positive role model for contributing to the team spirit;
Any other duties, as requested by OM.


Applicants must have the following qualifications and experience:
Qualified and registered paramedic with recent active experience, preferably in a hostile environment;
Certified and experienced in Basic and Advanced Life Support, First Aid and Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support, or equivalent;
Previous instructional experience and good understanding of structured training and capacity building, ideally holding a current instructor qualification;
Previous work experience abroad as medical lead/staff with UN or NGOs, preferably in the Humanitarian Mine Action field;
Hostile environment awareness training (HEAT) within the last two years or equivalent training and experience;
Work experience in field locations with limited logistical support;
Strong leadership, team building and communication skills;
Flexibility and cultural awareness and sensitivity;
Computer literacy essential including proficiency in Excel, Word, Power Point, etc.;
Fluency in written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of Arabic would be advantageous.
