Medical Coordinator , Iraq/Syria

DanChurchAid (DCA) invites applications for an experienced Medical Coordinator/trainer for the Syria-Iraq programme based in Erbil, Iraq and with current activities in North East Syria. DCA is initially offering a short-term contract that will make a significant difference and improve the personal safety of staff working in Syria and Iraq.

The DCA Syria-Iraq programme is a well-funded programme with a 3-year footprint in country and over 50 staff. The activities are wide-ranging and include emergency food distribution, cash transfers, NFIs, psychosocial support, risk education, child protection, emergency education and early recovery. The Iraq programme is still in its infancy, but funds are already secured for set up and expansion. It is a DCA ambition to restart explosive hazard clearance activities in both Syria and Iraq as soon as possible.

The Medical Coordinator/trainer will refer to the Operations Manager, and will be responsible for providing Basic Life Support training and First Aid training to national and international staff in Erbil, Iraq and in Syria. Additionally, the Medical Coordinator/trainer will support the programme with assessing possible medical facilities and contingency plans to be utilized in future operational planning.


The Medical Coordinator/trainer will have the following overall main responsibilities:

Organize and coordinate training and re-training covering Basic Life Support and First Aid to national and international staff in both Syria and Iraq.
If security allows, conduct training/retraining of DCA national staff in Syria.
Ensure that all personnel involved in humanitarian operations are trained in casualty evacuation procedures that include safe movement and transferring of the patient.
If security allows, develop assessments of hospitals to be used in case of accident/illness.
Work with procurement and logistics to obtain necessary medical supplies to improve First Aid kits in the DCA offices/houses and vehicles.
Prepare all relevant documentation. You must demonstrate the following competencies:

Sound judgement
Flexibility and cultural awareness
Computer literacy essential including proficiency in excel, word, power point, mapping, etc.
Fluency in English is a must and a working knowledge of Arabic and Kurdish is an advantage.

Qualifications required:
Certified and experienced in Basic Life Support, First Aid and Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support, or equivalent.
Previous instructional experience and good understanding of capacity building.
Previous work experience abroad as medical staff in military and/or NGOs.
Ability to establish overview and structure in a sensitive environment.
Willingness to cooperate and coordinate with persons from varied backgrounds and cultures.
Computer literacy essential including proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
Fluency in English essential and working knowledge of Arabic is an advantage. DCA offers:
