Occupational Health Nurse

Location: Canada Arctic Region
Schedule: 1 to 4 week-long rotations

Location: Mining site in operation in the Canadian Arctic (Kivalliq region, Nunavut)

We are currently seeking nurses with occupational health and general clinical experience to work with a dedicated team in Canada’s remote and arctic regions.


Departure: From Mirabel Airport, approximately 30 minutes North of Montreal, by chartered flight to site.

Please note there are also several other part-time nurse and medic positions to fill for the summer of 2016

Qualifications / Minimum Requirements
Currently certified as a registered nurse (RN) in Nunavut/NWT
A minimum of 5 years of nursing experience in emergency care, occupational health and trauma experience
Current BLS, ACLS, TNCC, WHMIS / TDG certifications an aset
Must be bilingual (French/English) written and oral
Proficiency in use of database software, medical records software and office software such as MS Word and Excel
Experience with evacuation an asset
Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background check and fit for duty exam.

Working Conditions

The nurse must be willing to work 12 hours per shift and be on call 24 hours a day. The project requires that all staff work as a team to ensure that schedules are met and a safe work environment is maintained. Every team member may be asked to perform duties not specifically identified in their primary position description. Work schedules and transportation are subject to delay and change due to weather conditions. Telephone, Internet and computer access available on-site. Each new employee is trained by our team prior to departure and upon arrival on site. Medical, administrative and technical assistance is available for employees 24 hours per day to handle emergencies.

Remuneration
Competitive salary, to be discussed based on experience and qualification
Employees are paid for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week for the entire duration of their rotation
Travel days and standby days are also remunerated
Payments are made bi-weekly by direct deposit
Two week rotation schedules
Possibility of continuing education
Transportation, meals and lodging are provided for the duration of the project
All medical equipment and supplies are provided


Job Responsibilities and Duties
Staff report to the site manager and Sirius management team. In an emergency situation, the MSP member takes directives from our team of physicians and competent local medical authorities as needed, or proceeds according to standard emergency medical practices and our wilderness protocols. MSP staff should be able to:
Respond to all medical problems and emergencies
Carry out physician orders in respect to patient care if required
Assist in arranging emergency medical evacuations, as needed
Coordinate with local health officials in the event of a medical evacuation
Maintain records of accidents, illness and injuries including recommendations for measures to avoid illness and injuries
Supervise the inventory checklist, ordering, receiving and stocking of medical equipment, supplies, and medications of the first aid station
Submit patient care reports to the company
Complete forms, documentation and reports as required by the relevant workers’ compensation board and conduct any required follow-up
Maintain a daily log of activities and patient care
Assist in administrative duties including documentation update, client reporting system and other duties assigned by the client representative
Ensure privacy for patients and confidentiality of personal information
Complete the camp opening, infirmary setup and camp closing activities as applicable
Provide medical, trauma and first aid care to injured and ill staff
Carry out physician orders in respect to patient care if required
Assist in arranging emergency medical evacuations, as needed
Coordinate with local health officials in the event of a medical evacuation
Maintain records of accidents, illness and injuries including recommendations for measures to avoid illness and injuries
Participate in camp health and safety committee and project management team
Assist the health and safety officer or Site Operations Manager in maintaining the health and safety plan and in keeping workers in good health
Participate and plan safety orientation sessions, toolbox sessions, emergency drills and scenarios for emergency medical team
Assist in the maintenance of emergency plans
