Health Extension Officer , Papua New Guinea

Location: New Ireland, Papua New Guinea

The Role

Reporting to the Supervisor Clinic, ERT & Paramedic, Health and Safety, the role is to support St Barbara’s exploration activity in Papua New Guinea through providing a rapid response to any medical emergency or medical treatment situations in a manner consistent with the company’s vision, business strategy, values, policies and compliance obligations

This is a FIFO position on a 16 days on, 12 days off roster. Point of Hire is restricted to Kavieng/ Rabaul or Tabar group of Islands.

Key roles and responsibilities include
Trauma Response (Primary Role)
Must be ready to respond to an emergency at all times – must abstain from alcohol for entirety of time on site.
Ensure that the Trauma Pack and rescue equipment is prepared for immediate response to an emergency call.
Ensure that Medical Emergency Response and MEDIVAC drills are conducted in accordance with the schedule.

Primary Health Care (Secondary Role)
Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records.
Record patients' medical information and vital signs.
Consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity.
Prepare patients for, and assist with, examinations and treatments.
Prepare rooms, sterile instruments, equipment and supplies, and ensure that stock of supplies is maintained.
Deliver infants and provide prenatal and postpartum care and treatment under obstetrician's supervision.
Administer local, inhalation, intravenous, and other anesthetics.
Provide health care, first aid, immunizations and assistance in convalescence and rehabilitation in locations such as schools, hospitals, and industry.
Perform physical examinations, make tentative diagnoses, and treat patients en route to hospitals or at disaster site triage centres.
Ensure all administration functions and tasks associated with the position are undertaken and completed in a timely and efficient manner.
Provide first aid, trauma management and Emergency Response training to staff and casuals as required.
The position will ensure that all weekly and monthly reporting is completed and distributed on time.
To ensure smooth transitions with back to back, hand over notes must be compiled digitally for ease of reference during personnel changes. Hand over notes must be concise, accurate and up to date. If possible the handover notes are to be emailed to the incoming crew member before departing for their home.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience required

Certificate in Senior First Aid
Attained Grade 12 Certificate
Have nursing & medical training and experience
Emergency Response qualifications and experience
Prepared to work or respond to calls out of hours as required
Previous experience and preparedness to stay and work from remote field camps
A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar role working with the mining industry and the community
Good managerial skills and know how to deal with community relations work and should know how to analyse existing methods and implement improvements
Prepared to accept responsibility
Strong ability to work effectively within a team and ability to work with a minimum of supervision
A commitment to “safe work” and the environment;
Accuracy with attention to detail;
