Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Medical Section of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS). The Medical Assistant will be based in Mogadishu (or in any of the sector headquarters based on need at any time) and reports to the Medical Officer.

Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Medical Officer, the incumbent carries out the following duties;

Responds to emergency calls and assists Medical Officers in providing adequate care.
Coordinates movement of patients within and outside the mission.
Coordinate referrals of staff members to local medical facilities.
Ensures good and accurate record keeping of all evacuation throughout Somalia
Ensures proper record keeping of medical evacuations to Kenya, South Africa and into any of the TCC/PCC countries
Ensures proper record keeping of repatriations of patients from TCC/PCC
Generate monthly Medical report for the DMS
Ensures effective liaison between the Mission’s Medical Cell, contingents, and other sections in the mission, namely Supply, MovCon, Aviation Unit, Security, MSC, Transport, etc.
Assist in liaising between the military and the civilian medical components in the mission area regarding referrals, hospitalizations and evacuations of uniformed personnel.
Coordinates specialist consultations and hospitalizations of mission staff in collaboration with the medical team in Nairobi.
Provides nursing care/advice and facilitates referrals of staff to the UN Medical Officer or outside physician as needed.
Assists in providing care to patients during medical evacuations and repatriations to home country
Participates actively in organizing and delivering First Aid Trainings to AMISOM/SNA troops.
Is a member of the mission’s Emergency Response Team;
Performs other related duties as required.
Perform any other tasks as may be assigned by the CMO

Knowledge of Basic and Advanced life support and be able to operate ECG Machines, Glucometer, and have knowledge in handling electronic medical records. Nursing diploma is required. Training in Basic and Advanced life support and in pre-hospital patient stabilization is highly desirable
Alternatively: Registered Nurse who has graduated with either an accredited Nursing Programme or accredited Nursing Diploma Programme is required.Work Experience

At least 6 years of progressively responsible experience in medical/nursing duties or related area is required. Experience in the coordination of Medical Evacuation activities in a UN field mission is highly desirable.Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other UN official language is an advantage.Assessment
