Job Posting Summary 

The Institute of Arctic Biology is seeking an Emergency Medical Technician and Safety Coordinator for the Toolik Field Station, a remote field camp located at 284.5 Dalton Highway, Alaska.

This is a seasonal position that works on a rotating two weeks on/two weeks off schedule.
The successful candidate will work independently as well as with a wide variety of faculty, staff and students; working in adverse weather conditions while performing tasks accurately.

Primary daily tasks include:
Acting as the on-site Emergency Medical Technician, emergency wilderness first responder.

Function as safety coordinator: perform safety inspections, emergency spill response team member, operate radios, inspect fire extinguishers and update the emergency operations plan.

Coordinate hazardous material storage, inventory and disposal.
Coordinate hazardous material shipments.

Instruct field safety, CPR, and first aid classes.

We are willing to train the right applicant for the Haz Mat functions as long as they are a current EMT.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position. Emergency first response, hazardous materials operations for first responders, hazardous material storage and transportation regulations, safety inspections, emergency pre-plans, field safety and first aid instructional methods.

Must be able to work with a large number of researchers under time and pressure constraints due to the busy field season, lift 80 lbs, and work under adverse weather conditions.
Typical education or training required for this position (including licenses). Current State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician certification and a valid drivers license
Length of time and type of experience required for this position. none
Preferred knowledge, skills or abilities for this position. Haz Mat Certifications, CPR and First Aid instructor, EMT II certification, wilderness EMT or FR certification.

Prior experience in operating trucks and off road vehicles preferred.
