Are you a Doctor, Nurse or Paramedic? Use your skills on an International Expedition

Volunteer with Raleigh this summer and use your specialist skills to support young people and community development projects overseas.
We are currently recruiting nurses, doctors and paramedics aged 25-75 to join our international teams in Borneo, Costa Rica & Nicaragua and Tanzania. In order to apply to become part of our medic team, you must have at least 2 years post qualification experience and medical skills that are transferable to remote static environments. This is an exciting opportunity to use your medical skills is a dramatically different setting whilst also supporting young people on valuable
sustainable development projects overseas.
This position will require being both a Medic and a Project Manager. You will divide your time between delivering the aims of the project and facilitating the personal development of the volunteers in the group, whilst continuously delivering all medical advice and support. You, alongside at least one other project manager, will be responsible for running the project in a remote area, managing around 12 international volunteers.
You will have support from Raleigh’s permanent country staff and fieldbase team. You will also be on hand to look after the general health of the volunteers, giving them basic first aid whilst also reacting to and managing any emergencies that may occur. You may also spend time at Raleigh’s fieldbase, our in-country headquarters, supporting other projects without a medic via phone or HF radio, usually to very remote settings and challenging environments.

Essential Skills
  • Medically qualified (either Doctor, Registered General Nurse or Paramedic) with a minimum of two years’ experience post-qualification
  • Medical skills that are transferable to remote static environments as well as transient trekking sites.
  • Willingness to be flexible and put the needs of the expedition and the volunteers first 
  • Ability to teach basic first aid and promote health and safety on expedition.
  • Ability to prioritise
  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to listen, empathise and work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds 
  • Open-minded attitude to learning about and engaging with Raleigh’s personal development concepts
  • Ability to apply Raleigh’s development concepts to own personal development
  • Ability to manage a variety of demanding and sometimes conflicting responsibilities in a physical, remote and dynamic environment 
  • Capacity to display effective personal leadership and develop leadership skills of others 
  • Ability to plan logically and in detail, producing practical, effective solutions to manage resources, achieve goals or overcome real problems 
Desirable Skills
  • A comprehensive understanding of wound care
  • Ability to cannulate
  • Accident and emergency experience
  • Knowledge of sports injuries, tropical diseases and mountaineering medicine (as applicable to the expedition country)
  • Previous experience of working with young people (17-24 years old)
If you are based in the UK you will need to be registered with the relevant professional body. If you are based overseas you will need to have studied at an approved institute (as specified by the GMC) and be able to provide proof of registration and indemnity insurance in your country of practice. We welcome a wide range of skills in the medic team; A&E experience, knowledge of tropical medicine, and expedition or wilderness medicine experience is particularly relevant.
All our volunteer managers are encouraged to fundraise for Raleigh International before the expedition. Fundraising targets vary between the different roles but once you are in country, Raleigh will cover the cost of your food, accommodation, training and preparation, specialist equipment, and insurance (excluding personal belongings cover). In addition to this target, you will need to fund your own flights to and from the expedition country, vaccinations, personal kit and a visa, if required.
